Texas and NAU's nurse practitioner programs
On NAU's licensure table, Texas gets Does Not Meet on every nurse practitioner plan: in NAU's own judgment, none satisfies the education Texas requires for NP licensure. Texas residents may enroll anyway, after attesting to plans to work in another state, which makes the program a fit for Texas nurses bound for Arizona or another state where NAU reads Meets.

Four NP rows, one answer
Texas is one of seven states with this answer for the two MS tracks and the FNP certificate, and one of eight for the PMHNP certificate. Its BSN rows fail too: NAU's four BSN formats read Does Not Meet for Texas, as they do for four other states, while Maryland and Wisconsin fall short only on the NP side. Enrolling from Texas: the attestation
Under NAU's licensure disclosure policy, in force since April 1, 2026, a program that leads to licensure may still enroll someone located in a Does Not Meet state, provided that student attests an intention to seek employment in another state. Before you enroll, PeopleSoft sends a disclosure automatically, triggered by the location on your record.
Take the attestation at its word. It fits a Texas RN moving to Arizona, or to a neighbor such as New Mexico or Oklahoma, where every NAU NP row reads Meets, and a nurse whose NP career will be built in some other state. It does not describe someone aiming to practice as an NP in Texas; with that goal, sit down with NAU's graduate nursing advisors before applying.
Clinical hours while you live in Texas
NAU frames its clinicals as happening throughout Arizona, and no NAU source says whether graduate practicums may happen in another state, let alone one where the program reads Does Not Meet. Where your FNP practicums (780 hours, NUR 661 through NUR 665) or the in-person PMHNP hours in NUR 680 happen is for your program coordinator to decide; SARA and moves are covered in the state authorization guide.
The Texas board does make out-of-state schools get approval before clinicals begin, but the board's Education Guideline 3.1.3, last revised on May 1, 2026, aims that step at prelicensure programs, SARA members included; graduate APRN programs sit outside it.
Practice limits and preceptors in Texas
AANP files Texas under restricted practice. Physician delegation and supervision frame every Texas NP's work, the physician protocols are written down and last a whole career, and Schedule II prescriptions are tied to particular practice settings. For your own search, note that the NAU standard (see preceptor requirements) counts physicians as well as NPs.
Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington tops the state at roughly 8.5 million residents, Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands trails it by under 600,000, San Antonio-New Braunfels holds about 2.8 million, and Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos about 2.6 million. A Houston search might start at Houston Methodist and a San Antonio one at University Health; Texas Health Resources is another large system, as are UT Southwestern Medical Center and Baylor Scott & White Health.
Money set aside for Texas preceptors mostly bypasses NP education. A tuition exemption under the state Education Code (section 54.356) goes to RNs precepting in public prelicensure programs; grants from THECB's Nursing Shortage Reduction Program go to Texas nursing programs, not the clinicians who precept for them; and a search for a Texas tax credit aimed at NP preceptors came up empty.
Your Texas license and the compact
Texas joined Arizona in bringing the Nurse Licensure Compact into force on Jan. 19, 2018. Hold a Texas multistate RN license and you clear NAU's admission bar and can practice as an RN in Arizona, useful if your hours or your move land there; NAU's rule on a license valid at the clinic is unpacked in the RN license guide.
Neither Texas nor Arizona belongs to the APRN Compact, so after NAU you apply for an NP license in the state you attested you would work in, on its terms.

Questions NAU students ask
Can I become a nurse practitioner in Texas through NAU's online program?
NAU's own table says its NP plans do not meet Texas's licensure education requirements, so NAU does not present them as a path to NP licensure in Texas. Residents may enroll anyway after attesting to plans to work elsewhere. If practicing in Texas is the goal, raise it with NAU's graduate nursing advisors before you apply.
Do I need Texas Board of Nursing approval for NAU clinicals in Texas?
Guideline 3.1.3, the rule under which the Texas board approves outside schools, is written for prelicensure programs rather than graduate APRN ones. That still leaves open whether NAU places NP students in Texas at all, which no NAU source addresses. Your program coordinator decides where your practicum hours can happen.
What if I move from Texas to Arizona partway through?
Update your physical location with NAU through the Change of Location form or LOUIE, and talk to your program about practicum effects before the move. Arizona reads Meets on every NAU nursing row. Your license has to be valid in Arizona, and a Texas multistate license is.
Does a Texas compact license satisfy NAU's admission rule?
Yes. Texas's compact membership dates from Jan. 19, 2018, and NAU admits RNs whose license satisfies the Arizona board's multistate rules. It covers RN practice only; NP practice after graduation needs its own license in the state where you work.
