Who can precept an NAU nurse practitioner student

A preceptor for a Northern Arizona University NP student must satisfy R4-19-502, the Arizona Board of Nursing rule reproduced in NAU's 2022-23 FNP Clinical Guidelines: they supervise you directly, hold a clean, current license in their own state of practice, have practiced a full year or more as an APRN or physician, serve patients like those your program targets and, if they are nurses, hold certification. The FNP Program Coordinator then approves each one.

The five tests, in plain terms

The 2022-23 guidelines open this topic by tying NAU to the state: the requirements for serving as a preceptor follow the rules of the Arizona State Board of Nursing. Those rules, R4-19-502 in the Arizona Administrative Code, come down to five questions about any candidate.

  • Will they supervise you directly? The preceptor is present and answerable for your work with patients.
  • Is their license current and clean where they practice? A nursing or medical license, or a compact privilege, carrying no encumbrance.
  • Have they practiced for at least a year? Time spent practicing as an APRN or a physician, not time as an RN.
  • Does their practice match your program? Their population focus has to be comparable to yours.
  • If they are a nurse, are they certified? National or board certification in the advanced practice role and population focus.

A candidate who passes all five is eligible, not yet approved. Approval comes from the FNP Program Coordinator, who also weighs the clinical setting.

License: the state where the preceptor works

The license test looks at the preceptor's own state, not yours. Their RN or physician license, or their privilege to practice on a multistate license, must be current and unencumbered in the state where they practice. A nurse practitioner working in Utah on a Utah or compact license meets it in Utah.

Federal employees get a wider rule. A preceptor on the federal payroll can qualify with a current, clean nursing or medical license issued by any state, which matters for students near federal clinics in Arizona. Before you commit, check the candidate on their state board's license lookup; a license under restriction or discipline rules them out.

Your own license is a separate question, and NAU's documents have handled it differently over the years. See the RN license rules for clinicals.

Experience and population focus

The experience test calls for a full year or more in practice as a physician or an APRN. Earlier years at the bedside as an RN sit outside that count, so a nurse practitioner still in their first year of NP practice is not yet eligible, however capable.

The focus test asks that the preceptor's patient population compare with the one the APRN program prepares you for. For FNP students that means family care across the lifespan, and the guidelines' suggested blend of child, adult, women's health and specialty time across the three FNP practicums shows the range NAU expects. How a preceptor whose practice covers one age group or a specialty fits the rule needs the FNP Program Coordinator's view before you build a term around them.

For PMHNP students, the comparable focus is psychiatric mental health. No PMHNP preceptor criteria of NAU's own are public, but R4-19-502 governs every APRN program the Arizona Board approves, so the same baseline holds.

Certification, and the fallback clause

Nurse preceptors need one more credential: current national certification in the advanced practice role and population focus, or current board certification in them. For an FNP preceptor that usually means national FNP certification; the Arizona rules list the AANP and ANCC family nurse practitioner credentials among those the Board recognizes.

The rule also carries a fallback. If no advanced practice preceptor who meets the requirements can be found, a preceptor may qualify through educational and experiential qualifications set by the nursing program and approved by the Arizona Board of Nursing. That is a decision for the program and the Board, not the student, so build your plan around a certified preceptor.

Physicians are measured by license and experience; the certification line is written for nurse preceptors. The 2021-22 Green Form offered MD, DO, FNP and Other as the preceptor credential choices.

What the preceptor sends, and what the role involves

Once your Green Form is in, NAU asks the preceptor for a CV or resume, professional licensure and any specialty certification. The FNP Program Coordinator reviews those papers and approves, and only then are you told you may begin.

The role itself is shaped by the rule and the guidelines. Arizona lets preceptors add to faculty-directed clinical learning without replacing faculty, so your course faculty keep oversight from a distance. On site, presence is required: the guidelines bar students from the clinical area unless their preceptor is there too.

Arizona's rule also asks each APRN program for no fewer than 500 hours of clinical practice supervised by faculty in the role and population focus, which is why the preceptor's teaching sits inside a course, not beside it. Clinicians weighing an NAU student can read our page for preceptors of NAU students.

Preceptors outside Arizona

Because the license test looks to the preceptor's own state, the rule itself allows a preceptor who practices outside Arizona. NAU's published documents stop short of a rule on graduate clinicals in other states, though its license and state authorization material plainly expects some students to live elsewhere. Your program coordinator holds the answer for your situation.

Host states add a layer of their own. Nevada, for example, tells out-of-state programs that APRN preceptors there must hold Nevada licenses and that students need a Nevada RN license, and California limits clinicals to students of programs its board has approved. Check your state's page, such as Nevada, and our state authorization guide before you recruit across a border.

How we vet a preceptor before you see the name

Every preceptor our placement desk brings to an NAU student has already been run through these five tests as NAU applies them. We confirm the license on the state board's lookup, verify a year or more of practice as an NP or physician, match the population focus to your track, and confirm national certification for nurse preceptors.

Next comes the paperwork: the preceptor's CV, license and certificate in one packet, a named signer at the practice and the site's written yes, so your Green Form arrives complete, first box checked, before the cutoff. If a fresh affiliation agreement looks necessary, you hear it from us on day one. The FNP Program Coordinator makes the call; we make sure the file behind that call is whole. Questions NAU students ask

Can a physician assistant precept an NAU FNP student?

The Arizona rule NAU follows is written around nursing and medical licenses and time spent practicing as an APRN or physician. A physician assistant holds neither kind of license, so put the question to the FNP Program Coordinator before counting on a PA preceptor. The older Green Form did list an Other credential option, but that is not a ruling.

Can a newly certified nurse practitioner be my preceptor?

Only after a full year of APRN practice. The rule counts time in the APRN or physician role, so earlier years as an RN do not fill the gap. Ask whether a more experienced NP or physician at the same practice could precept you instead.

Does my preceptor need an Arizona license?

Not under the rule as NAU prints it. The license must be current and unencumbered in the state where the preceptor practices, or be a multistate privilege, and a preceptor on the federal payroll can hold a license from any state. A preceptor practicing in Arizona needs a license valid in Arizona. Other states may add conditions for out-of-state students.

Are there separate preceptor rules for PMHNP students?

None that NAU has published. The APRN handbook NAU issued for 2023-24 was pulled from its site and never archived. R4-19-502 applies to all APRN programs the Arizona Board approves, so the license, experience, focus and certification tests hold, with a psychiatric mental health focus. Ask your program coordinator about any added NAU requirements.

Does my preceptor need prior teaching experience?

Prior precepting is not one of the tests in R4-19-502 as NAU prints it. The rule asks for direct supervision, a current unencumbered license, twelve months in APRN or physician practice, a comparable focus and, for nurses, certification. A first-time preceptor who meets those can be proposed, and the FNP Program Coordinator decides.
