Nevada: two licenses, one NAU practicum plan
A Nevada RN can enroll online with Northern Arizona University, whose licensure table says Meets for all four NP plans in Nevada. The complication is licensing: APRN students training inside Nevada need a Nevada RN license and Nevada-licensed preceptors, and an online school from elsewhere needs the Board's approval before it teaches clinically there.

Nevada's rules for a school based elsewhere
NAC 632.703 governs any nursing school running a slice of its program inside Nevada: a report on the Board's form, proof of accreditation or approval, compliance with chapter 632 of both the NRS and the NAC, and yearly school reports. Online programs, and other nontraditional ones, must hold Board approval to give clinical instruction in Nevada, and faculty teaching there must hold Nevada licenses. Graduate programs get no separate treatment.
The Board's Sept. 1, 2026 roster of outside schools allowed to bring clinicals alone into Nevada holds pre-licensure associate and bachelor's programs and no NP program. NAU describes clinicals throughout Arizona and has no published rule on graduate clinicals elsewhere, so put the Nevada question to your program coordinator before you approach anyone in Las Vegas or Reno.
Two Board practice decisions matter too. The first says caring for a patient located in Nevada takes a Nevada license, with nursing education involving direct patient contact listed among the covered activities. The second, from 2005, has faculty direct each student's clinical work, lets a preceptor oversee no more than a pair of students at once, and only on site, and expects an orientation and written objectives for preceptors.
Full practice, with a Schedule II waiting period
By AANP's reckoning Nevada NPs practice with full authority, with a Schedule II catch: those prescriptions wait until the NP has practiced clinically for two years, or for 2,000 hours, unless a physician-approved protocol allows them earlier. Arizona rule R4-19-502, the standard NAU applies, asks a preceptor for one year as a physician or APRN, so an NP in their second year can precept an NAU student while still inside Nevada's Schedule II waiting period. NAU's preceptor requirements has the rest of the standard.
Census Bureau estimates for 2025 put roughly 2.4 million in the Las Vegas-Henderson-North Las Vegas area, about 579,000 around Reno, and fewer than 60,000 in the Carson City metro. Systems on Nevada NP students' lists include Renown Health in the north and, in the south, HCA's Sunrise Health System, University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, the Valley Health System (operated through a Universal Health Services subsidiary) and Dignity Health, which runs hospitals in both Henderson and Las Vegas. They show where Nevada preceptors practice, not sites that take NAU students, and our research found no Nevada preceptor incentive.
Matching the license to the clinical day
Nevada sits in neither compact: no Nurse Licensure Compact bill is pending there, and the APRN Compact never passed. A Nevada license is good in Nevada alone, and multistate licenses issued elsewhere give no privilege inside Nevada. So an NAU practicum splits by where the patients are:
- Patients in Nevada: your active Nevada RN license, a preceptor holding a Nevada license, and a program the Board has approved under NAC 632.703.
- Patients in Arizona: an Arizona RN license, since Arizona's student exemption needs you authorized to practice as an RN in Arizona, which a Nevada license alone never gives.
- Admission to NAU: an Arizona license in good standing, proof you are eligible to get one, or a multistate license the Arizona Board recognizes.

Questions NAU students ask
Will my Nevada RN license cover NAU clinical hours in Arizona?
It will not. Nevada never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, so its licenses carry no privilege in Arizona, and NAU checks for a license valid where you train. Apply to the Arizona State Board of Nursing for an Arizona license well before your first Arizona clinical day.
Can a preceptor in Las Vegas supervise me on an Arizona license?
Not for patients in Nevada. Nevada's board wants APRN preceptors there to be Nevada-licensed, and the Arizona rule NAU follows already ties a preceptor's license to the state they practice in. The profile to seek is a Nevada-licensed NP or physician who also clears NAU's experience, focus and certification tests.
Has the Nevada board approved NAU's NP programs for clinicals?
Nothing public says so. The Board's September 2026 roster of other states' schools approved for Nevada clinicals lists pre-licensure programs only, and NAU publishes no Nevada statement for its NP plans. Your program coordinator, with NAU's State Authorization Compliance office, has the current answer.
Can I train at the Las Vegas hospital where I already work?
Only after the license and approval questions are settled. Hours with Nevada patients need your Nevada RN license, a Nevada-licensed preceptor and a program the Board has cleared, and NAU asks for an affiliation agreement even at a facility that employs you. Check with your program coordinator before you mention it to your manager.
