Arizona: studying and training as an NAU nurse practitioner student
Arizona is where every part of Northern Arizona University's NP pathway lines up. NAU's licensure table reads Meets for all four NP plans here, an Arizona or multistate compact RN license covers your clinical hours, and state law lets supervised NP students practice while enrolled. NAU's table for Arizona: Meets on every plan
NAU's professional licensure table lists Arizona as Meets for each nurse practitioner plan. That answer is built in: NAU's disclosure policy says any program leading to licensure must satisfy Arizona's educational requirements before the question of any other state even comes up.

The program pages add something no other state gets. The MS Advanced Practice and PMHNP certificate pages say graduates are eligible for Arizona state certification and may apply for prescribing and dispensing privileges in Arizona. The four BSN rows read Meets for Arizona too, although an August 2025 copy of the table briefly showed two BSN formats as Does Not Meet everywhere, Arizona included, before later versions corrected it. An online program with Arizona roots
The Maria and Steve Sanghi College of Nursing sits on NAU's Flagstaff campus and runs BSN formats in Flagstaff, Phoenix North Valley, Tucson and Yuma. The MS Advanced Practice and both NP certificates are online, though, so your clinical hours happen wherever your approved preceptor practices. FNP students log 780 of them across NUR 661, NUR 663 and NUR 665; PMHNP students complete NUR 680, which the catalog flags for in-person engagement.
An archived NAU clinicals page named Flagstaff, Cottonwood, Sedona, Tuba City, Navajo Nation sites, Yuma, Phoenix and Kingman as training locations, and slipped in Gallup, which lies across the New Mexico line. The Census Bureau's 2025 estimates show how lopsided that map is: over five million people in metro Phoenix, roughly a million around Tucson, and fewer than 260,000 in each of the Prescott Valley-Prescott and Lake Havasu City-Kingman areas.
So an Arizona search depends on your address. The north is a string of small towns joined by long highways, covered on the Flagstaff and northern Arizona page; the Valley and Tucson pack dense rosters of practices beside big systems, covered on the Phoenix and Tucson page. NAU's 2022-23 FNP guidelines warn that an offered placement may call for overnight stays at your own expense, which is the strongest case for a preceptor near home.
Your RN license for Arizona clinical days
Two rules settle it. Board rule R4-19-502(A) has NAU confirm that every NP student is licensed, without encumbrance, as an RN in the state where the clinical work takes place. The exemption in A.R.S. 32-1631(7) then lets enrolled NP students practice under competent supervision, provided their program is approved in the state of its parent institution and they are authorized to practice registered nursing in Arizona. NAU is approved in Arizona, so for Arizona hours the only open item is your license.
Arizona's Nurse Licensure Compact membership took effect on Jan. 19, 2018. An Arizona license works, and so does a multistate license issued by another compact member such as Utah, Colorado or New Mexico. A nurse whose only license comes from California or Nevada, neither of them compact members, applies to the Arizona Board for an Arizona license ahead of the first clinical day. NAU's documents have phrased the rule several ways; RN licenses for clinicals lines them up.
Every NAU NP student also carries one Arizona document whatever their address: the IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, listed among the clinical health requirements. NAU's instruction sheet gives applicants living in Arizona their own set of steps and points to the health science students category tied to A.R.S. 15-1881. From NAU graduate to Arizona RNP
Arizona certifies nurse practitioners under the title registered nurse practitioner, or RNP. Board rule R4-19-505 asks a first-time applicant for an Arizona RN license or compact privilege, national certification, fingerprints, a graduate degree with a nursing major, and an APRN program completed in the matching role and population focus. As we read the statute and Board rules, an Arizona RNP needs no physician agreement to practice, and AANP lists Arizona as full practice.
Prescribing takes a second application. Rule R4-19-511 grants prescribing and dispensing authority within your population focus to a certified RNP who shows at least 45 contact hours of education in pharmacology or drug-therapy management from the three years just before applying, and controlled substances also need a DEA registration filed with the Board. Arizona's bills to join the APRN Compact died in the Legislature in 2023, 2024 and 2025, so the RNP certificate stays an Arizona credential. Practicing in another state later means applying there on its own terms.
The Board's rule for schools based elsewhere
The Board's advisory opinion on APRN clinicals by out-of-state programs, revised in January 2019 and November 2020, says every such program must apply for Board approval before any of its students train in Arizona. Its table sets preceptor licensing for those schools: an APRN preceptor with an Arizona or multistate RN license plus Arizona APRN certification, or a physician holding an Arizona medical license. The schools must also track licensure and placements and answer an annual survey or audits.
The 2018 version let home-state-approved programs run Arizona clinicals with no Board approval, and NCSBN's host-state entry for Arizona still quotes it; the revised opinion is the later word. None of this binds NAU, an Arizona-approved program. For NAU students the preceptor test is R4-19-502 itself, which the FNP Program Coordinator applies before approving anyone.
Arizona also funded grants for volunteer preceptors of graduate students at in-state institutions, with rural and primary care preceptorships first in line. Neither the fiscal 2026 nor the fiscal 2027 budget funded it, and the statute carried a Jan. 1, 2027 repeal date. Research turned up no Arizona preceptor tax credit.
Arizona health systems, each on its own terms
Every entry below is the organization's own published student policy, taken from its live pages or archived copies. None describes an arrangement with NAU, which publishes no list of its clinical affiliates.
- Northern Arizona Healthcare (Flagstaff Medical Center, Verde Valley Medical Center): a legal agreement with the school before any approval, contact routed through NAH Education, onboarding in myClinicalExchange, and compliance done four weeks before the start.
- Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation: welcomes graduate-level students and sends rotation scheduling questions to its Academic Dean.
- Banner Health: its Center for Health Careers coordinates rotations across Banner facilities, and it discourages students from cold-calling for preceptors.
- HonorHealth, Dignity Health's Arizona Division and Valleywise Health: requests come from the school side, at least 30 days, 45 days and four weeks ahead respectively.
- Mayo Clinic in Arizona: inquiries only from an affiliated program's rotation coordinator, no sooner than four months out.
- TMC Health in Tucson: students needing a preceptorship write to its clinical student placement team.
- Onvida Health in Yuma: its academic page names NAU-Yuma, home to NAU's Yuma BSN programs, among partner schools whose students get priority placement; neither that page nor NAU's Yuma page mentions NP students.
The shared pattern is a school agreement, a school-side request and myClinicalExchange onboarding. On the Green Form, a system site usually means ticking the box that asks for help, while an independent practice can go in with the site's approval already marked.

Questions NAU students ask
I hold a multistate license from Colorado. Does it cover NAU clinicals in Arizona?
Yes. Colorado and Arizona both belong to the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a Colorado multistate license carries the privilege to practice in Arizona. That satisfies NAU's admission wording and the Board's license rule for Arizona clinical hours. If you move to Arizona permanently, ask the Arizona State Board of Nursing how the compact treats your license after the move.
Does NAU's MS FNP lead to Arizona NP certification?
NAU's licensure table marks the MS FNP as Meets for Arizona, and NAU's program page tells graduates they can seek Arizona state certification, Arizona prescribing and dispensing privileges, and national certification. The Board certifies you as an RNP once you present the RN license, degree, national certification and fingerprints its rule lists.
Which Arizona hospitals accept NAU nurse practitioner students?
NAU publishes no list of its clinical affiliates, so no outside page can answer that reliably. Banner, HonorHealth, Dignity Health, Valleywise and Northern Arizona Healthcare each expect a school agreement and a request from the school, so name the site on your Green Form, ask for assistance, and let NAU's Clinical Placement Coordinator confirm whether an agreement exists.
Why does NCSBN say out-of-state programs need no Arizona approval?
NCSBN's host-state entry for Arizona still quotes the Board's 2018 opinion, which let programs approved in their home state run Arizona clinicals without Board approval. The Board revised that opinion in 2019 and again in 2020 to require every out-of-state APRN program to apply first. Either version concerns schools based elsewhere, not NAU.
Is Arizona's preceptor grant still available to my preceptor?
It appears not. The Department of Health Services program for volunteer preceptors of graduate students received no funding for fiscal 2026 or 2027, unspent earlier money reverted when fiscal 2026 ended on June 30, 2026, and the statute listed a repeal date of Jan. 1, 2027. Its wording covered students at any accredited Arizona institution, NAU included.
