Oklahoma nurses in NAU's online NP programs
NAU's licensure table reads Meets for Oklahoma on all four nurse practitioner plans. Oklahoma lets RNs studying with an outside APRN program train there without separate board permission once three conditions hold, and a state tax credit rewards some primary care preceptors, though whether an NAU rotation counts is a question for the agency that runs it.

Oklahoma in NAU's table
Oklahoma sits between two harder cases. Texas, across the Red River, reads Does Not Meet on every NAU NP row, and Kansas, to the north, splits its PMHNP answers, yet Oklahoma is Meets from top to bottom, BSN rows included. That closes the education question and leaves clinicals and licensing.

Three conditions for out-of-state NP clinicals
The governing clause is OAC 485:10-5-12(c). Oklahoma skips the board petition altogether for an RN enrolled in an outside APRN program, on three terms that have to hold for the length of the practicum.
- Terms for you: an RN license Oklahoma honors, with nothing encumbering it.
- Terms for NAU's faculty: whoever supervises the clinical piece needs an unencumbered Oklahoma license, pitched at or beyond the level of the course.
- Terms for the program: NAU's curriculum has to satisfy what the Board expects of APRN education.
You control the first item; NAU controls the other two. NAU's own descriptions place clinicals throughout Arizona, and no NAU document speaks to graduate practicums elsewhere, so put the faculty-license question to your program coordinator before choosing an Oklahoma site; SARA is covered in the state authorization guide.
Restricted practice and your preceptor search
AANP ranks Oklahoma as restricted. Until a new NP there has logged 6,240 hours, prescribing happens under a physician's supervision, on paper, and Schedule II medications stay out of NP hands entirely. Keep that in mind for your first Oklahoma job. For the search itself, note that NAU accepts physician preceptors alongside NPs, as its preceptor requirements show.
Oklahoma City is the larger of two big metros, Tulsa the other; Lawton and Enid are much smaller. The University of Oklahoma's academic health system, OU Health, is one name a search might weigh. SSM Health's St. Anthony hospitals and Hillcrest HealthCare System are others, as are INTEGRIS Health and Saint Francis Health System, each running its own student process.
Oklahoma FNP students look for all-ages family practice that can see them through 780 hours and three courses (NUR 661, NUR 663, NUR 665); PMHNP students look for psychiatric care where the in-person NUR 680 fits.
Oklahoma's preceptor tax credit
A 2024 law, HB 3351, gives an income tax credit to physicians, physician assistants and APRNs holding Oklahoma licenses who provide primary care in Oklahoma and teach students, APRN students among them. The unit is the rotation, 160 hours in aggregate; the ceiling is ten rotations per preceptor per calendar year; and money is handed out in order of application until it runs dry. Refunds are not part of it, unused credit rolls forward up to five years, and it applies from the 2026 tax year to 2035.
Administration falls to a state body, the Health Care Workforce Training Commission, which reports that 2026 applications are open. Nothing in its program description either restricts the credit to Oklahoma schools or addresses students from other states, so the Commission is where a preceptor gets a firm answer.
RN license, compact and the Arizona card
Multistate licenses have come from Oklahoma's board ever since its compact start on Jan. 19, 2018, a date Arizona shares. An Oklahoma multistate license fits NAU's admission wording, meets the first of Oklahoma's clinical conditions and is good for RN shifts in Arizona. No APRN Compact law has passed in Oklahoma. Does NAU's online FNP meet Oklahoma's licensure education requirements?
Yes. NAU rates every NP plan, FNP or PMHNP, degree or certificate, as Meets for Oklahoma. That is NAU's judgment that the education fits Oklahoma's requirements; licensure itself still runs through the Oklahoma Board of Nursing after you graduate and pass national certification.
Do I need Oklahoma Board permission for NAU clinicals in the state?
No petition, as long as Oklahoma's three terms hold: a license that lets you work as an RN in Oklahoma, Oklahoma licensure for the NAU faculty member overseeing your clinical work, and APRN coursework that satisfies the Board. Your program coordinator is the one to confirm the NAU pieces.
Is an NAU rotation eligible for Oklahoma's preceptor tax credit?
That is unclear. HB 3351's credit is for clinicians licensed in Oklahoma who practice primary care and teach APRN students; each 160-hour rotation counts, and credits flow while money remains. Its published summary is silent on students from schools in other states, so your preceptor should ask the Commission that runs it before counting on it.
Will I prescribe on my own right after becoming an Oklahoma NP?
Not at first. Oklahoma's model, as AANP describes it, keeps a physician's documented supervision over a new NP's prescribing through the first 6,240 hours, and no Oklahoma NP may prescribe Schedule II medications. Weigh that when you choose where to practice after NAU.
