NAU nurse practitioner study from New Mexico
New Mexico reads Meets for every NAU nurse practitioner plan, and it is the one neighbor that turns up on NAU's own list of clinical locations, through Gallup. It shares the Nurse Licensure Compact with Arizona and lets NPs practice fully, but its rules for schools from other states can be read two ways, which leaves the placement call to your program coordinator.

Gallup on NAU's clinical map
An archived NAU page on clinical coursework lists towns where students train, all framed as Arizona: Flagstaff, Tuba City, Gallup, Navajo Nation sites, Yuma, Phoenix, Kingman and others. Gallup is the odd one out, a New Mexico town sitting on an Arizona list, and the only New Mexico place we found named in any NAU source.
Read it with care. That page speaks mostly about undergraduate clinicals, says graduate practice varies by MS track, and reminds students that transport, meals and housing are on them. Nothing in it says NP students train in Gallup. For NAU's Navajo Nation and rural placements, see rural and tribal clinicals; for anything across the state line, ask your program coordinator, since no NAU document rules on graduate clinicals outside Arizona.
New Mexico's rules for outside schools, read two ways
Ask NCSBN and the reply from New Mexico is brief: the state board lacks statutory power over APRN programs and points them to New Mexico's Higher Education Department, with one practical condition, that on-ground faculty and preceptors be able to practice as APRNs in New Mexico.
The administrative code tells a different story. Any program keeping students in New Mexico clinical or field placements beyond a single semester must, by rule (16.12.3.11(A)(2) NMAC), seek the board's approval for those placements and satisfy the minimum standards of the next section. The surrounding rules address schools that prepare nurses for New Mexico licensure and are silent on NP education, which leaves their reach uncertain.
It matters to FNP students in particular, because NAU's three practicums run across summer, fall and spring. Raise both readings with your coordinator before you settle on a New Mexico preceptor; the state authorization guide explains SARA.
Full practice and New Mexico preceptors
AANP rates New Mexico full practice, so an NP there sees patients without a physician oversight agreement and can precept an NAU student who clears the Arizona-based standard on our preceptor requirements page. New Mexico's own condition runs alongside it: the preceptor must be able to practice as an APRN in the state.
Albuquerque's metro is roughly four times the size of Las Cruces, with Santa Fe and Farmington next. Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Lovelace Health System and UNM Health, home of New Mexico's only academic medical center, are the big names, with CHRISTUS St. Vincent in Santa Fe; each keeps its own student process.
Fill the FNP sequence (NUR 661, NUR 663, NUR 665: 780 hours in all) with all-ages primary care, and give a PMHNP student a psychiatric site where NUR 680 can be done in person, as NAU requires.
Licenses, and the Arizona card that follows you
New Mexico's compact start date, Jan. 19, 2018, is Arizona's too. A multistate license from the New Mexico board covers NAU's admission wording and RN work on both sides of the line; the multistate version has carried its own board fee since June 1, 2026, so expect it at renewal. Questions NAU students ask
Does NAU send nursing students to clinicals in Gallup, New Mexico?
An archived NAU clinical coursework page lists Gallup among its clinical locations, next to Tuba City and Navajo Nation sites. That page speaks mainly to undergraduate clinicals and says nothing about NP placements there. If Gallup is near home, ask your program coordinator whether an NP practicum there is an option.
Is NAU's NP program something New Mexico's board approves?
New Mexico told NCSBN that its board has no statutory authority over APRN programs and refers them to the Higher Education Department. Its code separately asks programs with more than a semester of clinicals in the state to seek placement approval, without mentioning NP programs. Your coordinator can say how NAU handles it.
Will my New Mexico compact license work for NAU?
For admission and for RN practice in Arizona, yes: Arizona and New Mexico are compact partners, and NAU accepts a license that meets the Arizona board's multistate rules. The same multistate license is valid for clinical hours in New Mexico.
Could a New Mexico physician serve as my preceptor?
NAU's Arizona-based standard accepts physicians who have practiced at least a year with a comparable patient population. New Mexico's condition, as its board reported it to NCSBN, is written for preceptors able to practice as APRNs, so check any physician candidate with your program coordinator before you ask them.
