The state's size is the practical story, since Rhode Island has a single metro, Providence-Warwick, and the license question got simpler when Rhode Island rejoined the multistate compact for RNs in January 2024.

One metro, four systems
The Census counts roughly 1.11 million people in the Rhode Island portion of the Providence-Warwick metro, which crosses into Massachusetts. Drives are short, and so is the list of systems a search runs into: Brown University Health; Care New England; South County Health; and CharterCARE.
AANP grades Rhode Island full practice, and research recorded no transition condition for new NPs. NAU's own preceptor test then applies in full, with a year in practice, a matching population focus, certification for nurse preceptors and an unencumbered license where the preceptor works; the preceptor requirements page lays it out. Research found no Rhode Island incentive aimed at preceptors.
Rhode Island rules and a program from elsewhere
Rhode Island's nurse licensing and education regulation, 216-RICR-40-05-3, is about approving Rhode Island's in-state basic programs. Its text, as researched, sets no Board sign-off for schools from elsewhere whose students want Rhode Island clinical time.
One provision may still come up at a clinical site. Each Board-approved program in Rhode Island has to write active use of a statewide clinical placement registry into its agency agreements. Schools from other states go unmentioned, so if a site asks about the registry, hand the question to NAU.
NAU's own rule is the larger gap: its pages describe clinicals throughout Arizona, and no NAU source addresses graduate clinicals in other states. Your program coordinator decides, and the state authorization guide covers SARA.
Licensing since Rhode Island rejoined the compact
Rhode Island's health department dates its return to the Nurse Licensure Compact to Jan. 1, 2024, while NCSBN's implementation table shows Jan. 8. Whichever date you use, qualified residents have received multistate licenses since then. A multistate Rhode Island license fits NAU's admission wording and carries into Arizona clinicals. Rhode Island has no APRN Compact law, which leaves NP certification a state-by-state task; the RN license guide has NAU's versions.
One Arizona credential follows you to Providence regardless: NAU's NP students need Arizona's IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card, issued by that state's Department of Public Safety, wherever they live, and the fingerprint card page explains how to apply from out of state.

Is NAU's PMHNP certificate a Meets program for Rhode Island?
Yes, and the same answer holds for the three other NP plans in NAU's table. Meets covers licensure education, not clinical location. PMHNP students also face in-person engagement in NUR 680, so settle where those hours happen with your program coordinator early.
Does Rhode Island's clinical placement registry apply to NAU?
Possibly. In-state programs approved by the Board must build active use of a central, statewide placement registry into their clinical agency agreements. Whether a school from outside Rhode Island must take part, the rule never says. If a site brings it up, pass the question to NAU and let the program answer it.
What if a preceptor practices over the Massachusetts line?
Massachusetts reads Meets on NAU's table as well, yet its Board wants programs from other states to secure approval for each clinical placement, under rules framed for prelicensure programs. Its compact membership has not taken effect, with May 2027 the target, so training there would mean holding a Massachusetts RN license. The Massachusetts guide has details.
Is my Rhode Island license multistate?
According to the health department, qualified residents have received multistate licenses since Jan. 1, 2024. For a license dating from before then, or if you are unsure, confirm its status with the department before relying on it for NAU's admission wording. Otherwise the Arizona license route, holding or being eligible for an Arizona RN license, applies.
