Connecticut: training as an NAU nurse practitioner student

What is new is the RN license picture: on Oct. 1, 2025, Connecticut switched on its Nurse Licensure Compact membership, and that shifts what a Connecticut nurse brings to NAU.

Connecticut's program rules, read for an NP student
A Connecticut regulation grants programs from other states what amounts to automatic approval (its word is deemed) on three conditions: approval from the home board, a curriculum matching Connecticut's RN standard, and home-state licensure demands at or above Connecticut's. Nothing in it asks for a separate filing.
The catch for NAU students: those rules target programs whose graduates sit for a first license, and APRN programs are never mentioned. Where they do apply, a clinical agency in Connecticut needs a written contract, and supervision ratios cap each preceptor at two students, each faculty member at 16 precepted students, and direct-care groups at 10 students per instructor. A separate clause asks preceptors of advanced-level RN students for a nursing degree at bachelor's level, two years in their role and an active RN license (Connecticut's, or that of the state where precepting happens), one year more than NAU asks.
Whether any of this binds NAU's NP students is NAU's call. Its pages speak of clinicals throughout Arizona and no NAU source covers graduate clinicals elsewhere, so ask your program coordinator; the state authorization guide explains SARA.
Connecticut NPs, and where they practice
Full practice, in AANP's grading, applies to Connecticut NPs only once they complete a three-year, 2,000-hour stretch working alongside a collaborating physician. An NP midway through those three years may already meet NAU's bar of one year of experience, a comparable population focus and certification, laid out on the preceptor requirements page.
Greater Hartford, about 1.17 million people by the Census count, outranks New Haven, Waterbury-Shelton and the Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury metro. A Connecticut search list runs from Yale New Haven Health and UConn Health to Hartford HealthCare and Trinity Health Of New England, plus Northwell Health, a New York-based system operating Danbury Hospital among the former Nuvance hospitals in the state's west.
Your license after Connecticut joined the compact
Connecticut's health department says that from Oct. 1, 2025, RN students may train there on either kind of license: a Connecticut one, or a multistate license from whichever compact state is home. For NAU, holding the multistate version satisfies the admission wording and carries into Arizona clinicals, whereas a single-state Connecticut license points you to the Arizona license route. Hartford has not passed the APRN Compact, so NP certification will be state by state; the RN license guide has NAU's rules.

Does NAU's MS FNP meet Connecticut licensure requirements?
Yes. NAU's table reads Meets for Connecticut on the MS FNP and on the other three NP plans: the MS PMHNP, the FNP certificate and the PMHNP certificate. That settles the licensure education question only. Where your clinical hours may take place is a separate decision for your program coordinator.
I live near Stamford and work in New York. Which rules apply?
For enrollment, NAU looks at your location when you first enroll, so Connecticut's Meets row applies. Clinical hours inside New York run into NYSED's registration requirement for programs from other states. And if you plan to hold your NP license in New York, NAU's table says its programs miss that state's education requirements.
How many NAU students may one Connecticut preceptor supervise?
If Connecticut's education regulations apply, two at a time is the ceiling, and no faculty member oversees more than 16 precepted students. Those regulations were drafted with first-license programs in mind, so ask your program coordinator whether NAU applies them to NP clinicals in Connecticut.
When did Connecticut join the Nurse Licensure Compact?
Participation started Oct. 1, 2025, the date both NCSBN's implementation table and the state health department give. Before then, a nurse from another compact state needed a Connecticut license to work there. The separate APRN Compact has no Connecticut law behind it, so no multistate NP license exists for you yet.
