Wisconsin and NAU's online nurse practitioner programs
Northern Arizona University's licensure table splits Wisconsin: the four nurse practitioner plans read Does Not Meet, while the four BSN formats read Meets. Wisconsin nurses may still enroll in the NP programs on the strength of an attestation that they will look for work in another state. Clinicals inside Wisconsin add a hurdle of their own: Wisconsin's board must sign off on a nursing school from another state, at the graduate level too.

A split answer on NAU's table
Of the seven states where NAU's NP rows read Does Not Meet, only Wisconsin and Maryland see the BSN rows read Meets. For a nurse practitioner student, the graduate rows are the ones that count. NAU links two Wisconsin references: the Board of Nursing, housed in the state's Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS), and chapter N 8 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code.
| NAU plan | Wisconsin |
|---|---|
| Nursing - Advanced Practice, Family Nurse Practitioner (MS) | Does Not Meet |
| Nursing - Advanced Practice, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (MS) | Does Not Meet |
| Family Nurse Practitioner (GCERT) | Does Not Meet |
| Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (GCERT) | Does Not Meet |
| Nursing, Traditional Format (BSN) | Meets |
| Nursing, Compressed Format (BSN) | Meets |
| Nursing, Global Format (BSN) | Meets |
| Nursing - Accelerated Option (BSN) | Meets |
Who the attestation suits in Wisconsin
NAU's policy lets a student located in Wisconsin enroll in an NP program by attesting that the job search after graduation will happen in another state; an automated disclosure email reaches you before enrollment. On NAU's reading, then, the NP degree is not a path to Wisconsin licensure as a nurse practitioner. It suits a Wisconsin nurse whose career plans run toward Minnesota, Iowa or Illinois, all Meets states for the NP rows, or anyone preparing to move. Neighboring Michigan reads Does Not Meet as well. Ask the graduate nursing advisors what it commits you to.
Wisconsin's approval rule for outside schools
The rule lives in Wisconsin Administrative Code N 1.06, and DSPS summarizes it on Form 3067-OEE (revised April 13, 2026): a school of nursing from another state needs the Wisconsin Board of Nursing's approval. The form reaches practical nursing and RN programs at every level from associate to graduate, and continued approval hinges on a self-evaluation report, Form 3069OEE.
NAU publishes nothing on whether it holds that approval, and none of our sources show it one way or the other. Settle it with your program coordinator before you contact a Wisconsin site. SARA, covered in our state authorization guide, is a separate matter from board approval.
Licenses for Wisconsin clinicals
Form 3067-OEE also sets the preceptor bar: clinical faculty and preceptors working in Wisconsin need either a Wisconsin-issued license or the privilege to practice in the state. That comes in addition to NAU's preceptor requirements. For your own RN license, Wisconsin has been a compact state since Jan. 19, 2018, so a Wisconsin multistate license passes NAU's admission test; the RN license guide quotes NAU's language. Wisconsin has not enacted the APRN Compact.
A new APRN law, and where students look
Wisconsin rewrote its nurse practitioner licensing in 2026. Under 2025 Wisconsin Act 17, in force from Sept. 1, 2026, DSPS now issues APRN licenses, with the nurse practitioner one of four recognized roles beside CRNAs, CNSs and nurse midwives, and the old APNP licenses have been converted. Independent practice is a further step that needs its own application and the Board's approval. AANP still files Wisconsin under reduced practice, with physician collaboration, while noting the law's start date.
Milwaukee-Waukesha, around 1.58 million people, and Madison, around 710,000, are the largest metros, with Green Bay and Appleton next. Students ask about UW Health and Froedtert ThedaCare Health, about Aurora Health Care, which belongs to Advocate Health, and about Ascension Wisconsin and Aspirus Health; each keeps its own student process. No Wisconsin preceptor incentive was recorded.
Why Wisconsin-based NAU students choose us
Wisconsin poses several questions before a single clinical hour, and we answer them in order. The starting point is your program coordinator's answer on Wisconsin approval and out-of-state hours. Where Wisconsin sites are open to you, we search near home, from Milwaukee and Madison to Green Bay and Appleton, for preceptors holding a Wisconsin license or privilege and a current APRN credential, then check each against NAU's standard. Moving instead? We begin in the new state.
Each match comes with its CV, license and certification collected and the site's consent on record, so your Green Form reaches NAU with every attachment in place. Start on the contact form.
Questions NAU students ask
Do NAU's NP programs satisfy Wisconsin's licensure rules?
No. Every NP option NAU lists, FNP and PMHNP, MS and certificate, reads Does Not Meet for Wisconsin, even though the BSN formats read Meets there. A Wisconsin resident can still enroll, provided they attest that they expect to be employed in another state.
Has the Wisconsin Board of Nursing approved NAU for clinicals?
NAU does not say. Under N 1.06, as Wisconsin's Form 3067-OEE describes it, any nursing school based outside Wisconsin, graduate level included, needs the Wisconsin board's approval. Ask your program coordinator whether NAU can place graduate clinical hours in Wisconsin before you reach out to a site.
What did Wisconsin's APRN law change on Sept. 1, 2026?
2025 Wisconsin Act 17 replaced the APNP license with an APRN license covering four roles, converted existing APNP licenses, and made independent practice something an APRN applies for separately, subject to Board approval. For NAU students the practical effect is on how a Wisconsin preceptor's license reads when you verify it.
Can my Wisconsin preceptor rely on a multistate RN license?
For the RN piece, yes: the state accepts its own license or a practice privilege, and compact membership means a multistate RN license from another member state supplies that privilege. The nurse practitioner credential is different. With no APRN Compact in effect, an NP precepting in Wisconsin holds a Wisconsin-issued APRN license.
