Northern Arizona University NP Programs for Oregon Residents
Northern Arizona University's licensure table reads Meets for Oregon on the MS FNP, the MS PMHNP and both certificates, and since mid-2021 Oregon has let NP students of out-of-state programs train without first asking its Board. The piece to plan is licensing: Oregon never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, so Oregon clinical hours call for an Oregon RN license.

Oregon's rules for NP students from elsewhere
Oregon once screened these placements itself. Until mid-2021, an Oregon rule obliged NP students from graduate programs based elsewhere to get the Board's authorization first; its repeal took effect July 1, 2021. On the question of Board approval for outside APRN programs placing students, OSBN's APRN FAQ now answers simply: no.
A notice rule survives for pre-licensure schools, which file a form per track and renew it yearly. OSBN's placement page lists advanced practice programs among those spared that filing, and keeps two expectations. Anyone who teaches in Oregon should carry an active Oregon license, and before enrolling Oregonians, a school needs authorization from either the Higher Education Coordinating Commission or NC-SARA. Oregon's quiet does not settle NAU's question. NAU's descriptions of clinical sites stay inside Arizona, and it has issued no rule for graduate practicums elsewhere, so your program coordinator gives the final word on an Oregon practicum.
Full practice, and where Oregon students search
AANP classifies Oregon as full practice, so Oregon NPs work without physician oversight and commonly teach NP students. NAU weighs every candidate against Arizona rule R4-19-502, detailed on our preceptor requirements page.
Nearly two million of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro's residents are Oregonians, and students there consider Providence's Oregon hospitals, OHSU, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and Legacy Health. Salem, about 446,000, and Eugene-Springfield, about 382,000, sit down the valley, with Samaritan Health Services serving the mid-valley; Bend, about 266,000, anchors Central Oregon. Each writes its own student rules, and none has any link to NAU.

An Oregon license, since Oregon is outside the compact
The national compact map shows Oregon with no pending legislation, so multistate privileges from Arizona or elsewhere have no force there. NAU's 2022-23 FNP guidelines tie your RN license to the state of clinical practice, which makes an unencumbered Oregon license the requirement for Oregon hours. Oregon also stands outside the APRN Compact. The RN license guide traces NAU's wording.

Questions NAU students ask
Can Oregon residents take NAU's online NP program?
Yes. NAU's table lists all four NP plans as Meets for Oregon, and OSBN says schools enrolling Oregon students satisfy either Oregon's own authorization or NC-SARA, which NAU belongs to. Your program coordinator confirms whether your practicum hours can be done in Oregon.
Is Board approval still needed for NP clinicals in Oregon?
No. The Board dropped its prior-authorization requirement for these students as of July 1, 2021, and its APRN FAQ now tells outside programs that placing a student requires no OSBN approval. Oregon's yearly notice duty also skips advanced practice programs.
Will my Arizona compact license work for clinicals in Portland?
No. Portland lies in a non-compact state, and an Arizona multistate license carries no privilege there. NAU's guidelines call for a license valid where you train, so plan on an Oregon RN license before your first Oregon practicum.
Can I live in Portland and do NAU clinicals in Vancouver, Washington?
Only with extra clearance. WABON approves out-of-state distance programs before they place anyone in Washington, then limits approved placements to Washington residents and weighs other students one at a time. An Oregon resident training in Vancouver would need NAU on that approved list plus a residency exception, so ask your program coordinator before you pursue a Washington site.
Is there anything different for PMHNP students in Oregon?
Oregon's approval and notice rules treat every advanced practice track alike, so the differences come from NAU. NUR 680, the PMHNP practicum, calls for in-person engagement that NAU has not described in public detail, and NAU prints no PMHNP hour total. Ask your program coordinator about both before you approach a psychiatric practice in Portland, Salem or Eugene.
