How Idaho treats an APRN student
Idaho writes the permission into its nursing rules, at IDAPA 24.34.01.100.12.a. A registered nurse formally enrolled in an APRN program with national accreditation may do APRN work, so long as the work is integral to the curriculum and the nurse already holds the right to practice in Idaho, by Idaho license or by multistate privilege. CCNE accredits NAU's MS Advanced Practice and both graduate certificates, as our accreditation page sets out. Idaho Code 54-1412 adds a general student exemption for approved programs, limited to functions that go with formal teaching.
Missing from Idaho's books is a rule aimed at out-of-state schools that place students. The approval sections in its code and rules address programs offered inside Idaho, and for schools based outside the state, the Board's page offers only a staff inbox for questions. NAU, for its part, describes clinicals throughout Arizona and has published no ruling on graduate hours in other states, so the Idaho question belongs with your program coordinator; our state authorization guide explains where SARA fits.
Preceptors and the Idaho search map
AANP rates Idaho full practice, so its NPs care for patients without physician oversight and routinely teach students. Idaho's Board adopted an education policy in 2024 that ties preceptors to the student's goal: a preceptor's license may not rank below the credential the student is working toward, which means an APRN, or a clinician with a higher license, for an NP student. Idaho's people cluster in a handful of metros. Boise City, home to about 864,000, is where students weigh two large systems, St. Luke's and Saint Alphonsus. North Idaho centers on Coeur d'Alene, roughly 192,000 residents, and its Kootenai Health. Idaho Falls, roughly 174,000 people, anchors the east, and Twin Falls, about 124,000, the Magic Valley. All of these are examples; each one decides for itself how students get in, and NAU lists none as a partner.
One compact license, two states
Arizona and Idaho began honoring each other's multistate licenses on the same day, Jan. 19, 2018, when the current compact took effect. That lets one multistate RN license, issued by either state, meet NAU's admission wording, Idaho's practice condition for APRN students and NAU's expectation that you be licensed where you train. Advanced practice licensing stays state by state. Idaho has passed no APRN Compact law, so Idaho NP licensure after you finish is a separate Idaho filing.

Questions NAU students ask
Is NAU's online FNP program an option if I live in Boise?
Yes. NAU's table lists the MS FNP and the FNP certificate as Meets for Idaho, and NAU's NC-SARA membership covers the state. Before your first practicum, have your program coordinator confirm that clinical hours in Idaho fit NAU's plan for you, since NAU publishes no rule on graduate hours outside Arizona.
Will my Arizona multistate license work for Idaho clinicals?
It should. Idaho has been a compact member since 2018, and its APRN student rule accepts a compact privilege as well as an Idaho license, which also satisfies NAU's expectation that you be licensed where you train. With a single-state license from somewhere like California, plan on getting an Idaho license before the practicum starts.
Does Idaho make NAU apply before I train there?
Idaho's rules contain no specific provision for out-of-state programs placing students. The Board refers schools based elsewhere to its licensing staff for requirements. Ask your program coordinator to confirm whether NAU has any Idaho step to complete before your hours start.
Who can precept an NAU PMHNP student in Idaho?
NAU has not published PMHNP preceptor rules, and NUR 680 requires in-person engagement. Idaho's 2024 policy rules out a preceptor licensed below the NP level, and NAU's FNP guidelines apply Arizona's standard. Settle the PMHNP specifics with your program coordinator ahead of any commitment to a psychiatric site.
