Studying Northern Arizona University's NP programs from North Dakota
Northern Arizona University's licensure table marks all four of its NP plans Meets for North Dakota. The harder part is clinical: before an NP student from a school based elsewhere starts in a North Dakota facility, the state's Board of Nursing wants that school recognized and reporting who is training where.

Where North Dakota sits in NAU's table
NAU names the North Dakota Board of Nursing as the state's licensing contact, and every NP plan reads Meets, as do the BSN formats. In plain terms, NAU considers its FNP and PMHNP coursework enough for a North Dakota APRN license once you pass national certification.

NDBON recognition comes before any North Dakota practicum
Among host states, North Dakota asks more of online NP programs than most. NDBON's distance guidelines cover any program whose North Dakota placements lead toward licensure as an LPN, RN or APRN, which takes in NP tracks. The school files for recognition 60 days before students begin, then renews it each year.
Recognition is only the start. Every semester, before a student sets foot in a facility, the program reports to NDBON:
- each student by name, with a North Dakota or compact license number
- the facilities and the courses involved
- who precepts and who teaches, each with a resume and a North Dakota or compact license
- the signed affiliation agreements
- a statement from each facility confirming it has clinical room
The Century Code backs this up. Its student exemption covers a recognized out-of-state program only once the board has written notice, and only if clinical sites have room; another section requires such programs to hold approval from the board where they are based. NDBON also asks for proof of NC-SARA standing, or that North Dakota's higher education board has authorized or exempted the school. NAU takes part in NC-SARA.
Research did not show whether NAU holds NDBON recognition today, and NAU's clinical pages speak of sites throughout Arizona. Put North Dakota to your program coordinator before you recruit a preceptor, and see how SARA fits in.
Precepting where NPs practice independently
AANP puts North Dakota in its full-practice group, and research shows no transition-to-practice hours, so NPs in the state diagnose, treat and prescribe without a physician agreement. That gives an FNP student a genuine choice between NP and physician preceptors, each measured against NAU's preceptor requirements.
Most searches start in the four metros. Fargo's names include Essentia Health-Fargo and Sanford Broadway Medical Center, one of Sanford Health's hospitals; in Bismarck, students look at CHI St. Alexius Health, a CommonSpirit member, and at Sanford's Bismarck medical center. Farther north, Altru Health System is the Grand Forks name and Trinity Health the Minot one. Each keeps its own route for students; treat them as examples only.
No North Dakota preceptor incentive appeared in research.
Licenses: the compact now, the APRN Compact later
North Dakota's compact licenses and Arizona's both date from Jan. 19, 2018. A multistate license North Dakota issues to a resident is honored in Arizona, matching NAU's admission language and its rule that you be licensed where you train; our license page tracks how NAU has worded that.
The state's APRN Compact law dates from March 9, 2021, making North Dakota an early adopter. The compact stays dormant until a seventh state signs, and in 2026 NCSBN described a redesign in progress, so a North Dakota NP license remains single-state for now.

Questions NAU students ask
Can I enroll in NAU's online PMHNP certificate from North Dakota?
Yes. NAU's table marks the PMHNP certificate Meets for North Dakota, along with the MS PMHNP and both FNP plans. Where the in-person NUR 680 practicum happens is a separate question to settle with your program coordinator, together with North Dakota's recognition rule for out-of-state programs.
How far ahead does North Dakota need notice of an out-of-state NP clinical?
NDBON wants a distance program's recognition request 60 days before planned student activity, and a recognized program then files its semester report before students start. NAU's own guidelines ask for clinical documents two months ahead, so the timelines fit together if you and your preceptor start early.
Can a Minnesota-licensed NP precept me in Fargo?
Only with a North Dakota license or a multistate compact privilege, because NDBON's semester report lists preceptor licenses from North Dakota or a compact state, and Minnesota is outside the compact. The Fargo and Grand Forks metros both reach into Minnesota, so check the license before you ask.
Will North Dakota's APRN Compact law help me work across states?
Not for now. The 2021 law is on the books, but the compact has no effect until seven states enact it, and NCSBN began redesigning it in 2026. Meanwhile your APRN license from North Dakota covers North Dakota alone, and each other state needs its own application.
