Iowa and Northern Arizona University's nurse practitioner programs
Iowa nurses can study Northern Arizona University's FNP or PMHNP online: NAU's licensure table marks all four NP plans Meets for Iowa, where the finished credential is called an ARNP. For clinicals, Iowa lists conditions for schools based elsewhere instead of approving them, and it wants every NP student's license to be Iowa or multistate.

Iowa in NAU's licensure table
NAU sends Iowa readers to two pages run by the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing: the Board of Nursing's home and its guide to applying for an ARNP license. All four NP plans show Meets, and the BSN formats match them.

Iowa's conditions for an out-of-state program
The Iowa Board approves Iowa-based programs and nobody else. Its page for schools headquartered in other states lists what they owe Iowa anyway:
- clearance to operate in the state, which comes from Iowa's College Aid bureau
- respect for Iowa law, in addition to the home state's rules
- data sent to the Board on request
- faculty and preceptors in Iowa who are licensed by Iowa or through the compact
- a written agency contract that sets out each side's duties, leaves faculty responsible for what students learn, is reviewed annually and can be terminated

ARNP preceptors and what Iowa offers them
Under AANP's classification Iowa ARNPs practice with full authority, and research recorded no transition hours, so they diagnose and prescribe without a physician agreement. For the ARNP programs Iowa oversees, 481 IAC 616.16 wants most precepted time spent with an ARNP or a physician sharing the student's role and population; that clinician holds a license from their own state, and the written agreement is looked at again every year. NAU's preceptor requirements follow similar lines, and they are the test your candidate must pass.
Iowa lets preceptors turn the effort into renewal credit: a structured preceptorship of at least 60 hours earns 6 contact hours, once the student's school documents it. Ask NAU whether it issues that paperwork before you mention it to a preceptor.
Most Iowa searches begin around Des Moines and West Des Moines, then move to Cedar Rapids or Iowa City. Students look at University of Iowa Health Care, with UnityPoint Health and MercyOne rounding out our list. Every system handles students its own way, and none is named here as an NAU site.
Your license for Iowa clinicals
Iowa has issued multistate licenses since the compact launched on Jan. 19, 2018. Nurses already licensed who train in Iowa must be licensed by Iowa or hold a multistate license, and they practice under Iowa Code; section 152.1 excuses unlicensed students only and names licensed RNs, LPNs and ARNPs as outside its reach. A multistate license from Iowa also works in Arizona; our license page covers how NAU's documents phrase the rule.
The Quad Cities are the trap. The Davenport-Moline-Rock Island metro crosses the Mississippi, and the Illinois side lies outside the compact, so a clinic there needs an Illinois RN license (our Illinois guide has the details). Questions NAU students ask
Can I study NAU's FNP online from Iowa?
Yes, by NAU's licensure table, which marks the MS FNP, the FNP certificate and both PMHNP plans Meets for Iowa. The license you would earn in Iowa is called an ARNP. Where your clinical hours may take place is a separate question for your program coordinator.
Will Iowa's Board sign off on NAU's NP program?
It has no process for that. Iowa's Board approves only programs based in Iowa and gives other schools a list of conditions instead, from clearance through Iowa's College Aid bureau to compact or Iowa licenses for faculty and preceptors and yearly contract reviews. Meeting them is the school's task, so check with NAU.
Do Iowa preceptors get credit for teaching a student?
Yes: Iowa credits 6 contact hours toward renewal when a preceptor completes a structured preceptorship lasting 60 hours or more, documented by the student's institution. Research found no Iowa tax credit or grant for NP preceptors.
I live in Davenport. Can I train at a clinic in Moline?
Only with an Illinois RN license. Moline and Rock Island are on the Illinois side of the river, and Illinois has no compact membership, so an Iowa multistate license gives you nothing there. NAU's own rules also ask for a license good where the clinical takes place.
