Arkansas also asks less of a distant school than many states do: our research surfaced no rule from the Arkansas State Board of Nursing requiring an outside program to get permission before sending a student in for clinical hours alone, a reading not yet checked with Board staff. What Arkansas rules say about outside programs
Arkansas regulates out-of-state schools mainly when they try to plant a new program in the state. At that point the Board's standards in 17 CAR Part 125 apply, together with a green light from Arkansas's Division of Higher Education, approval back home and national accreditation. The APRN chapter, Subpart 10 of 17 CAR Part 123, speaks to programs, new or already running, that qualify by "deemed status" through national accreditation. Neither text addresses an online student who only needs clinical hours.
Arkansas's student exemption, found at A.C.A. 17-87-103(2) in the Nurse Practice Act, covers practice that is incidental to study, but only for students enrolled in Arkansas Board-approved programs. NAU's approval comes from Arizona, so ask your program coordinator how NAU views clinical practice in Arkansas, and ask the Board if you want its own word.

Arkansas practice rules and health systems
In AANP's terms Arkansas is reduced practice. An NP there keeps a regulated arrangement with a physician touching at least one aspect of the work, and for certain drugs, prescribing is allowed only inside a physician protocol agreement. None of that alters the qualifications NAU checks in a preceptor (preceptor rules).
Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway, at roughly 778,000 residents, is the biggest metro; UAMS Health, Baptist Health and CHI St. Vincent, a CommonSpirit hospital, all serve it. For children's care, Arkansas Children's is the name in our research, and since pediatric time belongs in NAU's recommended FNP mix, family practices that see children matter in any Arkansas search. Mercy has a Fort Smith hospital and another serving the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers area, and Jonesboro anchors the northeast. Each system screens students its own way.
Fort Smith's metro crosses into Oklahoma, and the Memphis metro reaches into eastern Arkansas. A clinic over either line follows that state's rules, and Tennessee's are in flux (Tennessee guide). Our research lists no Arkansas preceptor incentive.
Licenses for training in Arkansas
Arkansas carries the Nurse Licensure Compact inside its Nurse Practice Act, in Title 17, Chapter 87, Subchapter 6, and its multistate licenses have been valid since January 19, 2018. Holding one meets NAU's admission rule and makes you legal for clinical hours at home; the RN license guide walks through how NAU words the requirement.
The APRN Compact has no Arkansas law behind it, so NP practice there after graduation means an Arkansas APRN license and the physician arrangement above. Questions NAU students ask
Must NAU get Arkansas approval before I train in Arkansas?
Nothing in the Arkansas Board's rules or guidance, as our research read them, requires an outside program to be approved before clinical-only placements; the rules for outside schools come into play only when one establishes a program inside Arkansas. That reading has not been checked with Board staff, and NAU's own view on out-of-state clinicals comes from your program coordinator.
Can I use my Arkansas compact license for NAU?
Yes, for admission and for clinicals at home. NAU's NP admission accepts an Arizona license or compact multistate privileges, and Arkansas multistate licenses have existed since January 19, 2018. For clinical hours in Arkansas the license must be unencumbered and valid there. A single-state Arkansas license raises a separate admission question for NAU's graduate nursing advisors.
Will NAU's FNP degree let me practice as an NP in Arkansas?
NAU's table marks the MS FNP and the FNP certificate as Meets for Arkansas, so NAU judges its education sufficient for Arkansas licensure. After graduating you would apply for an Arkansas APRN license and practice under the state's reduced-practice rules, including a physician arrangement and protocol limits on some prescriptions.
What if I move from Arkansas to Texas mid-program?
Texas is one of seven states where NAU's table marks the NP plans Does Not Meet. NAU asks students to update their physical location and to contact their program about effects on practicums before relocating, and its automated licensure disclosures follow the location on file.
