Northern Arizona University's licensure table answers Meets for Alabama on every NP plan, so enrolling from Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile or Montgomery is straightforward. Clinicals take more planning. Alabama's Board of Nursing keeps students of out-of-state programs out of its clinical settings until the program has sent a letter of intent, gained approval and paid a yearly out-of-state fee, and that filing is due 15 days or more before your first clinical day.

Every NP plan and BSN format reads Meets for Alabama, with the Alabama Board of Nursing linked as licensing body. Meets covers the education for a future Alabama license; permission to train there comes from the Board rule below. The licensure disclosure guide names the states that answer differently.
The filing Alabama wants before any clinical day
Alabama's rule for outside programs (Rule 610-X-3-.09 in the state's administrative code) covers advanced practice schools based elsewhere, as well as pre-licensure ones. The work is the program's, not yours: NAU would send the Board its intent letter and approval paperwork at least 15 days ahead of your first clinical day, and cover a yearly out-of-state fee that is charged per institution, runs by calendar year and is not refunded.
What that submission lists
- You, by name, with your Alabama RN license number or your multistate one
- Your clinical supervisor's name and license number (for faculty, an Alabama or multistate RN license)
- The facility hosting the clinical time
- A statement from the facility's top nursing leader, meaning its DON or CNO
Faculty who teach students in Alabama for more than 30 days in a year need an Alabama or multistate RN license too. Since the filing is NAU's to make, ask your program coordinator early whether NAU files for Alabama sites and what it needs from you. NAU's pages speak of clinicals "throughout Arizona" and no NAU source rules on graduate clinicals elsewhere, so one conversation can settle both points.
Collaboration, preceptors and Alabama's systems
Alabama sits in AANP's reduced-practice tier. An Alabama NP's practice includes a state-regulated collaborative tie to a physician covering some element of care, and Alabama's nursing and medical boards regulate NP practice jointly. Whatever collaboration your preceptor works under, they must still pass the standard NAU applies; our page on who can precept walks through it.
UAB Medicine anchors Birmingham, a metro of roughly 1.2 million. Huntsville Hospital Health System serves the north; Mobile has Infirmary Health alongside USA Health (the University of South Alabama); Baptist Health serves Montgomery. Each has its own student channels.
Alabama does give community preceptors a state income tax credit through APTIP, run by the Alabama Statewide AHEC Program Office from tax year 2024 until September 29, 2031, but only for rotations serving programs physically based in Alabama.
Your license for Alabama clinical hours
The Board's FAQ is plain about post-licensure students, MSN students among them: for clinical experiences in Alabama, it expects an Alabama RN license in good, unencumbered standing, or else a compact multistate license issued by one of the party states. Alabama started issuing multistate licenses on January 1, 2020, two years after Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee.
A multistate license also meets NAU's admission rule and Arizona's demand that NAU confirm your license where you train, which the RN license guide covers. The APRN Compact is not law in Alabama; an NP career there after graduation begins with Alabama's own approval and a collaborative agreement. Can NAU students do clinicals in Alabama?
Alabama lets students of out-of-state programs train there once the program has filed its letter of intent, gained Board approval and paid the annual fee. NAU publishes no rule on graduate clinicals outside Arizona, so your program coordinator confirms whether NAU will file for your site.
Who files the Alabama letter of intent, me or NAU?
The program does. Rule 610-X-3-.09 places the submission on the out-of-state program, due at least 15 days before clinical learning starts. You supply pieces of it, such as your Alabama or multistate RN license number, and the site supplies its nurse executive's statement. Raise it with NAU early.
Does Alabama's preceptor tax credit apply when someone precepts an NAU student?
No. The credit is tied to rotations that support eligible schools physically based in Alabama, and it is aimed at community preceptors in rural, medically underserved areas. Anyone who precepts an NAU student does it without that credit, which is worth knowing before you make the ask.
I live near the Georgia line. Could I train in Columbus instead?
Possibly, under Georgia's rules. Georgia's Board asks no approval of out-of-state NP programs, but it expects your RN license to be Georgia-issued or multistate and wants APRN clinical instruction given by a nurse with Georgia APRN authorization.
