Wyoming reads Meets on all four of Northern Arizona University's nurse practitioner rows, and the Wyoming State Board of Nursing asks graduate programs from other states for no approval. It does expect paperwork from the school: a written notice before you begin clinicals in Wyoming and a signed contract with the facility where you train.

Wyoming's notice-and-contract rule
The Board's Chapter 6 rules sort out-of-state programs into two lanes. Schools preparing new LPNs and RNs need the Board's permission and must justify the request with home-state approval and license records. Programs for nurses already licensed, where WSBN lists APRN and DNP study, follow the lighter lane below.
- Authorization to operateWyoming wants every outside program cleared one of two ways, through NC-SARA or by registering with Wyoming's education department. NAU's route is SARA, as our state authorization guide explains.
- A letter to the BoardWhen one of its students is about to start clinical learning in Wyoming, the school writes to WSBN, and the Board offers a model letter to follow.
- A contract with the facilityHours cannot start until school and site have a signed written contract, with a copy held for the Board on request. At NAU that role belongs to the affiliation agreement, which is needed even at your own employer; see affiliation agreements.
Wyoming's rules speak only to Wyoming. NAU's pages list Arizona clinical locations and put nothing in writing about graduate hours beyond the state, so your program coordinator confirms a Wyoming practicum before any letter goes out.
Full practice and Wyoming's regional hospitals
AANP puts Wyoming in its full practice column, so Wyoming NPs practice independently of physicians and can take on FNP or PMHNP students on their own authority. NAU's own screen is Arizona rule R4-19-502, set out on our preceptor requirements page.
Wyoming has just two metro areas, Cheyenne at about 103,000 and Casper at about 81,000, plus the Gillette micro area near 48,000. In the capital, students look at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center; in Casper, at Banner Wyoming Medical Center; in Gillette, at the Campbell County Health system. Laramie's Ivinson Memorial Hospital is affiliated with UCHealth, and Sheridan Memorial Hospital serves the north. None of them is an NAU partner, and each sets its own student rules.
Casper's hospital belongs to Banner Health, the Arizona-based system many NAU students know from home. Banner's student pages describe one central team for rotations across all its facilities, with requests flowing from the school rather than the student; ask how that route applies to Casper.
Licensing: compact RN privileges, and an APRN Compact on the books
Wyoming's compact date, Jan. 19, 2018, is the same as Arizona's, so an Arizona multistate license works for RN practice across Wyoming and satisfies NAU's expectation that you hold a license where you train, a rule our RN license guide unpacks.
Wyoming also stands out as a state whose legislature passed the APRN Compact; it sits in the Wyoming statutes under Title 33. Passing it has not activated it, since the compact needs seven enacting states before it runs, and in 2026 NCSBN described a redesign now underway. Until something changes, a Wyoming NP license after graduation is a Wyoming application.

Questions NAU students ask
Does NAU need Wyoming Board approval before my clinicals?
No approval, but a notice. Wyoming spares post-licensure programs, APRN included, from Board approval; the school sends WSBN a letter before your Wyoming clinical and signs a contract with the site first. Your program coordinator handles NAU's side of that.
Does Wyoming's APRN Compact law give me a multistate NP license?
Not yet. Wyoming passed it, but the compact stays dormant until seven states have, and NCSBN is reworking it. For now, NP licensure after graduation happens state by state, and your RN multistate license is the only compact credential in play.
Is an Arizona compact license enough for clinicals in Casper?
For the RN side, yes. Wyoming and Arizona share compact membership, so the multistate privilege reaches Casper and anywhere else in Wyoming, and it satisfies NAU's license-where-you-train expectation. If your sole license comes from outside the compact, apply for Wyoming licensure first.
What should a Wyoming PMHNP student plan for?
Start with NAU, not Wyoming. The PMHNP clinical course, NUR 680, includes in-person engagement whose place and schedule NAU leaves unpublished, as it does the PMHNP hour total. Wyoming's letter-and-contract rule then applies as it would for any APRN track. Get the PMHNP details from your program coordinator before lining up a Cheyenne or Casper psychiatric site.
