Typhon or Exxat: where your NAU clinical record lives

Typhon is the graduate clinical tracking system named in Northern Arizona University's FNP Clinical Guidelines for 2022-23, and NAU's 2026 BSN pages still use it. Exxat turns up in later mentions, including a 2023-24 APRN handbook that is no longer posted. Nothing NAU currently publishes says which one today's graduate NP students use, so your course faculty will tell you which to set up. The contents are the same either way: license, health documents, clinical logs and evaluations.

What each NAU source names

The NAU sources that name a tracking system split by date. The graduate handbooks up to 2022-23 say Typhon, the later mentions say Exxat, and the current undergraduate pages have gone back to, or never left, Typhon.

The 2023-24 APRN handbook is the missing link. It covered both NP tracks, it has been pulled from NAU's site, and the archive never captured it, so NAU's switch, if there was one, cannot be confirmed from public pages. Your practicum course and course faculty are the reliable source.

What goes into the system

NAU's BSN pages describe Typhon as a student tracking system for reporting clinical experiences, taking evaluations and submitting required documents. The exchange-cohort page described Exxat in similar terms, as a portfolio for clinical documentation and performance sheets. The graduate guidelines fill in what that means for an NP student:

Your RN license, uploaded and kept current (license rules)
Health and credentialing documents, maintained in both your student file and the tracking system
The records behind the two-month document rule, including BLS, immunizations, TB screening and the fingerprint card
NAU's HIPAA training record, which the BSN pages have students upload as a transcript
Clinical experience entries for every day you spend with a preceptor
Your preceptor's evaluation of you, completed online

Logs that prove the right hours and mix

The log is where NAU sees whether you met the numbers. Both FNP paths need 780 clinical hours, with no fewer than 500 under faculty supervision in the family population focus, spread over the three practicums (NUR 661, NUR 663, NUR 665). The 2022-23 guidelines also recommend a spread of about 100 pediatric hours, 450 adult, 100 in women's health and 75 to 150 in a specialty, and fix floor counts for certain visits, five pelvic exams and five prostate exams among them.

Enter each clinical day promptly and describe visits clearly enough that totals by age group and visit type can be checked at a glance. A running tally shows early in the term whether you are short on children or women's health, while there is still time to add a site. Evaluations and your preceptor's part

In the 2022-23 guidelines, your preceptor's evaluation of you is completed online in Typhon. That makes the preceptor a user of NAU's system, if only briefly, and a busy clinician will do it faster when they know it is coming. Mention it at the first meeting, and tell them roughly when in the term it falls.

Course faculty sit behind the evaluation. The guidelines describe them as providing indirect supervision and oversight, and acting for the college as the liaison between the university and the agency. Health system portals and your records later

NAU's tracking system is not the only portal you may meet. Several Arizona systems, Valleywise, Dignity Health, Banner, Northern Arizona Healthcare and HonorHealth among them, onboard students through myClinicalExchange, which belongs to the health system rather than NAU. A student placed at one of those sites can end up maintaining immunizations and screening in both places, on two different timelines; the health systems guide has the windows.

After graduation, NAU's BSN pages say students keep access to their Typhon portfolio for five years. NAU has not published the equivalent for graduate students, so download your logs and evaluations before your final term closes.

Questions NAU students ask

Does NAU use Typhon or Exxat for nurse practitioner students now?

NAU's public pages do not say. The 2022-23 FNP guidelines use Typhon, a 2023-24 APRN handbook that is no longer posted reportedly used Exxat, and the 2026 BSN pages use Typhon. Your course faculty or the practicum course itself will tell you which account to set up.

Who completes the preceptor evaluation in Typhon?

Your preceptor does. The 2022-23 FNP guidelines say the preceptor's evaluation of the student is completed online through Typhon. Let your preceptor know early that it is coming and roughly when, and point them to course faculty if they have trouble with the form or the system.

Can I log clinical hours on a weekend or holiday?

Only if the FNP Program Coordinator has said yes beforehand. The 2022-23 guidelines treat weekend, holiday and break-week clinical time as an exception that needs that prior approval. Ask before you schedule, and keep the approval with your records in case the entries are questioned.

Is myClinicalExchange the same thing as Typhon?

No. myClinicalExchange is the onboarding platform several Arizona health systems use for their own student requirements. Typhon, or Exxat, is NAU's clinical tracking system. A student placed at a system facility may need to keep documents current in both, each on its own schedule.

Will I keep access to my clinical records after graduation?

NAU's BSN pages say students keep access to their Typhon portfolio for five years after graduation. NAU has published no matching rule for graduate students, so save copies of your logs, evaluations and hour totals before your final practicum closes.
