Out-of-state clinicals under Missouri rules
Missouri is quiet on this point. Research found no Board rule or guidance telling schools from other states to seek approval or give notice before a Missouri placement. Chapter 20 CSR 2200-2 governs the programs the Board itself approves. The practice act's student exemption, RSMo 335.081(6)(a), covers supervised students in schools the Board recognizes and says nothing about a school from another state. The Board was not asked directly, so treat that silence with care.
NAU is quiet too. Its pages talk about clinical locations throughout Arizona, and no NAU document rules on graduate practicums elsewhere, so the first conversation belongs with your program coordinator. For NAU's reciprocity footing, read state authorization at NAU.
Precepting in a restricted-practice state
Missouri is one of AANP's restricted-practice states. Every Missouri NP works under a collaborative practice arrangement with a physician, and experience never retires it; the arrangement carries rules on how many NPs a physician oversees, how charts are reviewed, and controlled substances. For your search that cuts two ways: a Missouri NP preceptor works inside that arrangement, and the collaborating doctor is often a strong candidate too, since NAU accepts physicians who clear its preceptor rules.
Missouri's incentive leaves NP students out. The income tax credit in RSMo 135.690 rewards doctors and PAs who train Missouri's own medical and PA students unpaid; APRN preceptors and nursing students appear nowhere in it, so an NAU placement earns the preceptor nothing under it.
Search areas follow the four metros: St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield and Columbia. Frequently researched systems include CoxHealth, BJC HealthCare, SSM Health and Mercy, plus MU Health Care from the University of Missouri. Their student processes differ, and none is offered here as an NAU site.
Licenses on both sides of Missouri's borders
Missouri's compact statute, RSMo 335.360 onward, took effect in July 2017, and its multistate licenses followed on Jan. 19, 2018. A Missouri multistate license works in Arizona, which covers NAU's admission rule and its requirement of a license good where you train; our RN license guide has NAU's versions.
The metros are where it gets tricky. Part of greater St. Louis lies in Illinois, a state that never joined the compact, so an Illinois-side clinic needs an Illinois RN license. Kansas City straddles Kansas, where NAU's table marks the PMHNP certificate Does Not Meet even though its other NP plans meet. Our Illinois and Kansas guides cover both. Does NAU's PMHNP certificate meet Missouri requirements?
Yes. NAU's table marks the PMHNP certificate Meets for Missouri, as it does the MS PMHNP and both FNP plans. Kansas, across the line from Kansas City, is the one to watch: there NAU marks the PMHNP certificate Does Not Meet while the MS PMHNP still reads Meets.
Can a collaborating physician precept me in Missouri?
Yes, if that doctor holds an unencumbered license in their own state, has practiced a year or more, and sees patients like those in your track. The FNP Program Coordinator approves every preceptor. Because Missouri pairs each NP with a physician, one practice may give you two candidates.
Must NAU notify Missouri before my practicum there?
Research found no Missouri Board rule calling for approval or notice from programs based in other states, though the Board itself was not contacted. NAU has published nothing on out-of-state graduate clinicals, so your program coordinator gives the answer that counts.
Can my Missouri preceptor claim a state tax credit?
Not for an NAU student. Missouri's community-based preceptor credit is limited to doctors and PAs teaching Missouri's medical and PA students. Neither NPs nor nursing students appear in it, so this placement does not qualify, whether your preceptor is an NP or a physician.
