When time is short, plan around the two NAU cutoffs that come before your first clinical day: the Green Form deadline for your term, and the rule that your clinical documents are on file two months before rotations. For a spring 2027 NUR 665, the later of the two Green Form dates NAU has printed is October 31, 2026. Here is how to use the weeks you have left.

Your cutoffs, term by term

The table pairs each FNP practicum with its term, the Green Form dates on NAU's two published forms, and the point two months before the term opens. The form in the 2022-23 guidelines gives the later dates; the 2021-22 form asked for requests about a month sooner. NAU no longer posts graduate handbooks, so confirm this year's date with the Clinical Placement Coordinator.

Two patterns stand out. In summer and fall, your own document deadline arrives before the newer Green Form cutoff, so the documents clock runs out first. And if your rotation starts later than the first day of term, count two months back from the rotation date; course faculty can tell you when clinical time begins.

What takes the longest

The affiliation agreement is usually the slowest piece. NAU's 2021-22 Green Form said a new one could take anywhere from a few days to a few months, and NAU requires one even at a site that employs you. A site already under agreement with NAU removes that wait, and only the Clinical Placement Coordinator can confirm which sites do. NAU affiliation agreements covers the process.

Health systems run their own clocks on top of NAU's. HonorHealth asks for requests 30 days out, Dignity Health's Arizona Division 45 days, Valleywise four weeks with approval three weeks ahead, and Northern Arizona Healthcare wants compliance finished four weeks before the start. Phoenix and Tucson preceptors and Flagstaff and the north describe each route.

Your own file is the third clock: American Heart Association BLS taken in person, immunizations and TB screening, the Arizona fingerprint clearance card and a personal liability policy. The document deadline page lists them.

What a fast placement looks like

Quick approvals tend to share four traits. The preceptor already meets Arizona's rule as NAU applies it and can send a CV, license and certification within days. The site has agreed to host you, so the Green Form can go in marked as approved by the site. Someone in the office knows who signs agreements. And, ideally, NAU already holds an agreement with that site.

An owner-run or NP-owned practice near home often fits that profile better than a large system, because the person who decides is in the building and there is no separate onboarding platform to clear. For FNP students, a practice that sees children and women's health patients also keeps your hour mix on track from the first week, so speed now does not create a shortfall later.

A one-week push

Confirm the real cutoffAsk the Clinical Placement Coordinator which date applies to your term this year. The newer form says late requests may not be completed in time, which is not the same as refused.
Work several leads at onceContact every qualified practice within your drive in the same few days, rather than waiting for replies one by one.
Screen on the first callConfirm license, at least a year working as a physician or advanced practice nurse, a comparable population focus and, for NPs, national certification before anyone commits.
Gather the paperworkCollect the CV or resume, license and certification from the preceptor, the site's approval, and the name of the administrative contact for the agreement.
Submit, then close your fileSend the Green Form as soon as a qualified preceptor says yes, then finish any gap in your own documents before the two-month point.
Keep faculty informedTell course faculty where things stand; they act as NAU's liaison with the agency once you begin.

If a cutoff has already passed

A missed Green Form date does not automatically end your term. Ask the Clinical Placement Coordinator right away whether your request can still be completed, and have a qualified preceptor's documents ready so the answer can be yes if time allows.

The two-month document rule carries firmer consequences. NAU's 2022-23 guidelines say late documents can keep a student out of clinical orientation and lead to administrative withdrawal from both the clinical course and its theory course, retaken the following academic year. If the current term is already lost, turn straight to the next one: secure the preceptor for the returning practicum now, so that cutoff is met with weeks to spare.

Your placement advisor contacts several qualified practices near you at once, screens each clinician against Arizona's rule as NAU applies it, confirms the site's approval, and gathers the CV, license and certification plus the name of the person who signs agreements. We also look past the deadline in front of you. While one practicum is being secured, the next term's search is already open, so the next cutoff arrives with a preceptor in place. Questions NAU students ask

Can I submit the Green Form before a preceptor has fully agreed?

NAU's form has a box for that situation: instead of confirming that the site approved the placement, you ask for help requesting one you are interested in, and the Clinical Placement Coordinator works with the site. When time is short, though, a committed preceptor whose paperwork is already in hand remains the quicker road to approval.

How long does NAU take to approve a preceptor?

NAU publishes no turnaround time. The steps are the Green Form, an affiliation agreement where none exists, the preceptor's CV, license and certification, and approval by the FNP Program Coordinator, after which you are told when you may start. The agreement is the variable part, anything from several days to several months on the 2021-22 form.

Does the two-month rule cover my preceptor's paperwork or mine?

NAU's 2022-23 guidelines state it for the health and credential documents in your student file, such as your BLS card, vaccination records, TB result, fingerprint clearance card and liability coverage. Preceptor paperwork travels with the Green Form and its own cutoff. Aim to have both finished by whichever date comes first.

Can weekend clinical days make up for a late start?

Only with permission given in advance. NAU's 2022-23 guidelines bar clinical time on weekends, holidays and university breaks without the FNP Program Coordinator's prior approval, so a late start usually means more weekday hours. Ask early if you expect to need weekend days; pacing your hours shows the weekly math.
